About the event

The 29 July 2025 Mw 8.8 earthquake on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia was the largest earthquake globally in well over a decade and sixth strongest ever recorded by seismometers. The earthquake generated a tsunami that affected the northwest Pacific and had impacts across the eastern Pacific. This was followed by the eruption of Klyuchevskoy volcano. This seminar will bring together experts to delve in to this complex cascading hazard and its impacts. We will hear about each hazard and its mechanisms and impacts, as well as the implications for disaster risk financing and management of the response on the ground.

Date and time: January 28, 19:00 UTC (11:00 Pacific, 20:00 Central European Time, 06:00 Canberra, 08:00 Auckland).
